What James Harrison Means for New England

James Harrison New England

The New England Patriots have a history of adding veteran players toward the end of the season. The latest late-season addition is former Steelers LB James Harrison. In a transaction that has been widely discussed, we’re going to take a look at just what this signing means for the reigning champs.

Day 1 in the books

Bolstered Defensive Line

Harrison brings depth to a thin Patriots pass-rush. This is one of the biggest reasons for the Patriots adding the 39-year old veteran. With Trey Flowers being the biggest pass-rush threat for the Patriots, the team was forced to look for additional rushers when he suffered a rib injury. Harrison also brings a bevy of knowledge on potential playoff opponents in the Steelers and Ravens.

Knowledge

Even though the Steelers can easily change line calls and other nuances of their game, Harrison knows the larger picture. If asked, or so inclined, he could detail certain defensive formations and could be a big help Tom Brady and the offense. Not only will Harrison’s knowledge of the Steelers defense be beneficial, but his experience going against Pittsburgh’s offensive line in practice could help as well. Harrison can now teach his new teammates what moves work particularly well against certain linemen.

Not only does Harrison bring all the information he has on the Steelers, but he has plenty of experience against Baltimore. Sitting in a wildcard spot, the Ravens could make it past wildcard weekend and potentially match-up against New England. Harrison has played at least two games a year against Baltimore his entire career. Such familiarity gives him knowledge similar to what he would have against Pittsburgh’s offensive line.

Attitude & Determination

Harrison is one of the scariest lineman/pass rushers/players in the National Football League. The way he plays, combined with a stern look on his face, brings a new personality to the defense. Harrison plays to get to the quarterback and make his defense better. He’s one of the hardest workers in football as witnessed by viewers of his workouts on social media, sometimes immediately after games.

Harrison brings a new edge and a treasure chest of knowledge to a Patriots defense in need of a pass rusher. This match of player and team late in the season could be the key to a Super Bowl run.
