Welcome to another edition of your mans favorite segment, Music Monday! Last week, we went over who had some of the best albums of 2016. Today, we are going to go through who were the best rappers of 2016. I asked members of the PerSources team who they thought was the best rapper of 2016 as well and we ended up with a winner in the PerSources family.

Best Rappers:

J. Cole (voted by TPR)

I can see why the boss thought J. Cole was the best of 2016. I know he just dropped his album a couple weeks back, but he still made a huge impact on the music industry. People are waiting on pins and needles all year waiting for new music from him. The two singles “Everybody Dies” and “False Prophets” broke the internet the day they dropped and showed the rap game who the best is. The real is back the ville is back flow bananas peel this back!

Lil Yachty (voted by Martin 1.0)

Go ahead! Tell me that Lil Yachty isn’t a rapper! Well, even if you don’t like Lil Boat, no one can ignore the year he had. The dude just started rapping and making music seriously for barely over a year and now he’s in Sprite commercials with Lebron James (I REPEAT LEBRON JAMES). His mixtape “Lil Boat” was one of the best mixtapes of the year, his features have been awesome and he was by far the feature king of 2016. I don’t see him slowing down any sooner!

Lil Uzi Vert (voted by David Hennessey)

I love this choice by David. Lil Uzi Vert doesn’t like to consider himself a rapper, but he’s dropped some fire this year. “Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World” is one of the best mixtapes of the year with no songs worth skipping. The best songs are “Money Longer”, “P’s and Q’s”, and “Team Rocket”. He also dropped plenty of singles, another mixtape titled “The Perfect Luv Tape”, and kept the buzz going about his upcoming album and a second “Luv is Rage” mixtape. Uzi created a sound we haven’t heard much of before 2016 but it has created a great run for him and I hope he keeps it going in 2017.

Gucci Mane (voted by Martin 2.0)

I mean we can’t talk about 2016 without mentioning Gucci Mane can we?? This guy gets out of jail and drops an album within a week! No one in 2016 has worked harder than Gucci Mane. He dropped 3 albums and two mixtapes within 4-5 months. His feature game is still on point including a feature on one of the best rap songs of 2016 “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd. He got engaged at the Atlanta Hawks game without having to get on one knee!! the East Atlanta Santa by far killed 2016 and made the most out of it. I wish my 2016 was as good as Gucci’s!

21 Savage (voted by JTA)

21 21 21 21! This guy captured my attention when I first saw his Freshmen Cypher for XXL. It was one of the most interesting things I watched all year and I knew I had to check him out. “Savage Mode” came out in July and I don’t think I’ve stopped listening to it since. “X” is by far my favorite song of 2016 and I will always have room in my heart for “No Heart”. 21 Savage worked with Metro Boomin on the tape and both of them absolutely killed 2016. Let’s not forget 21 Savage also being cosigned by Drake AND getting a feature on “Sneakin”, which is also one of my favorites of 2016. 21 Savage is even who I modeled my my player after in NBA 2K16! I love 21 Savage and I need more 21 Savage in 2017!

Winner: Chance the Rapper (voted by Mike, Mikey Raw, and Kaleb)

Chance the motha effin rapper! With a fantastic 2016, Chance the Rapper has to be the best rapper of 2016. It all started with his excellent work he did on Kanye’s TLOP with the song “Ultralight Beam” and “Waves”. He also had a secret verse on “Famous” that scared Kanye so bad he didn’t put it on the album! Flash forward to May, Chance drops his best work yet in “Coloring Book” (which was voted best album of 2016 by PerSources). The album made me buy Apple Music so I could always listen to it! I have kept it since but I have to thank Chance for that. After waiting almost 3 years for another Chance project, I hope we don’t have to do the same in 2017!

Honorable Mentions:

Kodak Black: Even in jail, his music blew up and we are expecting huge things in 2017 for him. His “Lil Big Pac” mixtape has excellent, and many songs such as “Skrt”, “Like Dat”, and No Flockin” made their runs in 2016.

Young Thug: Young Thug dropped plenty of heat this year that if you haven’t heard any of it, you lived under a rock. Slime Season 3 was a great album that you guys need to hear if you haven’t already.

Migos (mostly Quavo): Migos did their thing in 2016 starting off with YRN 2 in the beginning of the year. “Bad and Boujee” is one of the best songs of 2016 and is now an internet meme unfortunately. Quavo killed it this year with his feature game being fire with songs such as “Good Drank” showing how great of a hook artist he is.

Rae Sremmurd: I mean, they had the best rap song critically in 2016 with “Black Beatles” and were the creators of the Mannequin Challenge! They showed again in 2016 that Sremmlife is here for life! “Sremmlife 2” was a great sequel to their first album and they didn’t disappoint! Swae Lee is one of the best hook writers in the game and Slim Jxmmi is still Uncle Jxmmi!

Thank you again for reading me this year and 2017 will be PerSources year. You read it here first.
