F.R.I.E.N.D.S and How I Met Your Mother are two of the best comedies of two generations. The first captured the fans of the 90s and the latter during the 2000s. Usually, when a show copies an original it turns out to be a flop. That wasn’t the case for HIMYM, and here I am ranking all the main characters of HIMYM. This is a list I made by polling hundreds of people, and with a personal bias. I’d like to start by saying I love both shows and all characters, but this list had to be made. Now I must say, the best way to enjoy each of these shows is to watch them in chronological order. I promise you, its WAY better than catching them individually. Don’t believe me? Try it.
#11 Phoebe Buffay
Phoebe Buffay is pretty much the queen of odd characters. The free spirited hipster with odd romantic experiences was often hysterical in the show. What dropped her to last place on the poll? Her voice. Yes, her cat song might be pretty funny but aside from that, Phoebe’s voice often made me want to wear ear plugs, especially when she was screaming. Call me crazy, but hipsters aren’t even that funny. Phoebe had a heart of gold and often was funny, but on this tough list, she had to be last place.
#10 Monica Geller
Monica Geller at times was the funniest character in the show. The formerly fat chef was the mother of the group and was often very funny. She hesitated at no opportunity to roast anyone, but sometimes her OCD was a bit too much for me. Unlike Ted Mosby who would get made fun of for his weird quirks, Geller took hers very seriously.
#9 Ted Mosby
Havvvvve you met Ted? Ted Mosby was the absolute main character of HIMYM and my personal second favorite character. However, his hopeless romantic character and interest in things most people deem boring dropped his ranking on the list. If it were my personal list, he’d be near the top but I am well aware of how many people absolutely hate Ted. I’m sure most people would have him as absolutely last on their list. But for me, some of his moments were absolutely hysterical.
#8 Lily Aldrin
Lily is a hysterical character with many fun moments. She also adds a lot of sexual humor to the show and her flashes of lesbian moments are often highlights of the episodes. However, as a man there are some things that I just can’t overcome. Season one, episode 21, when she left Marshall is something I struggled to overcome while watching it. Also, Lily’ treating adults like she treats her kinder gardeners can often be a little bit too much for me. For instance, the episode she was mad at Ted for calling her a “Grinch” even though she was, set me off. I have a lot of ups and downs with Lily.
#7 Ross Geller
Ross Geller was often so pathetic that it was actually really funny. The 90s certainly liked the characters to have dramatic yelling scenes and no one was a better character at exaggerating scenes than Ross Geller. However, Ross often being pathetic especially towards love interest Rachel Green dropped him down the list just a little bit.
#6 Robin Scherbatsky
Robin is probably my least favorite person on this list. Like I said, polls and other factors came into making this list. For many people, she is everyone’s favorite character in the whole show. Robin was very good at making fun of people, much like Chandler Bing from FRIENDS. Her being from Canada really opened up some jokes from across the border. However, she was a big too cold for me at times, a characteristic that I personally did not enjoy.
#5 Barney Stinson
We’ve reached the point of the list where I don’t think you can go wrong. Each of these characters are #1 on different people’s lists. To me, Barney would finish a spot higher but once again the peoples’ voice played into this ranking. Barney is one of the most bizarre characters of any show of all time. By season three, you’d have Barney at the top of your list. However, as the show goes on, Barney’s character often depressed many of us especially in the mid-latter seasons. Some of his best memories were great, some of the lows absolutely sucked. P.S Marshall Eriksen saved Marshall and Lily’s relationship so for me, he has a special place in my heart. He’s awesome.
#4 Chandler Bing
Chandler is many people’s favorite character from FRIENDS. If you enjoy sarcasm or making fun of other people, nobody in the history of comedy is better at it than Chandler Bing. Although I hated some of his love interests, as the show progressed he certainly had some of the funniest moments in the show. Not to mention, his ‘dad’ scenes were certainly hysterical.
#3 Rachel Green
Rachel Green, all men wanted to date her and all women wanted to be her (or date her). Rachel is the reason why many people could watch the show on mute. She is one of the most beautiful women on the planet till this day and her character appealed to many young girls in the 90s who hoped to grow up to have many love interests in their young adult hood. (breaking news, yes many girls want to try dating a lot of different guys). Although I hated how she tormented Ross at times, she was often one of the funniest characters on the shows. however, her looks play a major part in bringing her to the top.
#2 Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen is the sweetest character and possibly the perfect, most ideal boy friend there is. He is nice, caring, tall, strong, gentle, sweet and absolutely loves Lily. His faith and love in her never wavered despite Lily dumping him out of the blue. Marshall is also often too funny. His soft side was often a comedic delight for the show. In addition to being funny and a good boy friend, he was a good friend. Everybody needs a Marshall Eriksen in their lives.
#1 Joey Tribbiani
Joey Tribbiani wins the award for this list’s best character. While I personally prefer Marshall slightly over Joey, Joey is certainly a fan favorite. Even if you didn’t like FRIENDS (a lot of people don’t), you certainly got a good laugh out of Joey. How you doin? Joey was a good person with a heart of gold who often did everything he could for his friends and never failed to make us laugh. Don’t think we’ll find many people arguing with this selection.
