This Saturday night UFC Fight Night 89 will be held in Ottawa, Canada. The main event is a huge fight in the welterweight division between Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Rory MacDonald. The fight is most likely for the number one contender spot and the next shot at the welterweight division. The co-main event of the night has two long time veterans going face to face, when the ‘Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone and Patrick Cote step into the octagon.
The main event between Wonderboy and MacDonald is a great fight between two fighters of the highest caliber. This is MacDonald’s first fight back since his epic title fight against Robbie Lawler, which may be the greatest UFC fight of all-time. MacDonald has been a top welterweight for years now, but Thompson is fairly new on the scene compared to most. Thompson has hit the scene with a vengeance, showcasing his outstanding talent in kickboxing and karate, demolishing the former champ Johnny Hendricks in the first round. Macdonald has been chasing UFC gold for years now, fighting in the shadow of his training partner GSP. He finally got the title shot he was waiting for and came up short, but as many believed he would, he is still right in the mix of things with the title contenders.
Wonderboy is a type of fighter the UFC is yet to see. He brings a karate and kickboxing base to his fights and throws some of the sharpest and quickest kicks you will ever see. He brings constant pressure and a barrage of flying kicks and punches from angles fighters have not seen. He is on a six fight win streak, hoping that the seventh will get him a much deserved title shot. I am picking Stephen “WonderBoy” Thompson to win this fight by TKO. I love watching him fight and the techniques he brings, even though Rory will be his toughest fight to date and is a proven warrior, I think Wonderboy is on a run right now that could possibly be ending with a championship belt.
The co-main event is a great fight for real fight fans. Two real veterans of the sport and UFC Donald Cerrone and Patrick Cote. Both these guys are going to push the pace and really mix it up with punches and combinations. I see Cowboy coming out on top in this fight over Cote, most likely by submission, as most of Cowboys win are. Cerrone is great at using his sticking and boxing to force the fight to the ground, where his legit black belt skills come into play and finishes the fight.
Should be two great fights with four high level fighters competing in them. Canada is always a crazy crowd, and they will be going crazy for the hometown kid Rory MacDonald to win in the main event. I have been choosing Wonderboy in this fight since it was announced, so I was not going to jump ship, but when I found out the fight was in Canada, I got scared for Wonderboy. Rory coming back from the best fight ever, in front of his home crowd, is going to be jacked up and ready to go. It is going to be a huge test for Wonderboy, let’s see if he can answer the bell.
