The U.S’ Losers Tournament Is Just Pointless and Soft

With some big names missing out on the World Cup, the U.S is looking to make their own World Cup

After missing out on the World Cup, the United States is looking to set up an international tournament next summer to compete in. They’re interested in forming a tournament composed of teams that failed to make the World Cup in Russia next year. Teams like Italy, Netherlands and Chile would be amongst the big names of said tournament. Though it would be played in the same summer, the tournament wouldn’t be on simultaneously as the World Cup. In my eyes, this “Losers Tournament” is a desperate attempt to remain relevant.

First of all, I personally am not a fan of this potential tournament for various reasons. For one, the concept of the tournament has an overall soft mentality to it. You can’t just fail to make a tournament and go out and do your own. It’s the “I didn’t get invited to a party so I’ll have my own party with a bunch of people that couldn’t get in” mentality. Kevin Durant soft.

Secondly, who would the teams be taking? Many teams are in a rebuilding process after their disastrous qualifying campaign. Some have yet to actually hire their new manager. I wouldn’t be interested in seeing a bunch of mediocre (yes, mediocre) teams desperately try different players in a different formation in a tournament that means nothing. I’m also not sure that some of the bigger clubs in Europe would be very happy to let their star player miss preseason to go play this excuse of a tournament.

I’ve read some people’s comments on Twitter claiming that this would be like the Europa League of the World Cup. Though I agree to some extent, I still don’t think it would be enough to draw people’s attention. The Champions League is undoubtedly the biggest club tournament in Europe but it’s no World Cup. Also, the anticipation leading up to the World Cup cannot be compared in sports. Finding a close second will be nearly impossible to find.

It’s too early to know the full details about this potential tournament. I have many questions which cannot be answered just yet so I’ll try to limit my judgement on the tournament. As much as I try, there’s still many questions that need to be answered right now before they continue planning anything. For example, how would they decide which teams are worthy of playing in the “Losers Tournament”? Where would it take place? What days? If it’s not an official FIFA tournament, clubs aren’t required to let their players attend. How would they actually get players to come?

Overall, I don’t think this tournament is needed nor is it a good idea. Frankly, it’s unfair to do this tournament simply the United States and a couple of big names missed out this year. Big teams have been missing out since the start of the tournament in 1930 and they had to watch it at home like the rest of us. All the big names that didn’t make it this year failed to do so because they were either unable to defeat inferior rivals, incompetent coaches or the lack of team chemistry. Instead of worrying about making a tournament because you’re sad that you missed out, focus on rebuilding so this doesn’t happen in 2022 either..
