Did the Ravens Start Lamar Jackson Too Late?

Kenneth K. Lam / Baltimore Sun

Lamar Jackson is now 2-0 as a starter for the Baltimore Ravens. Why he wasn’t named the starter sooner is beyond me. Jackson is far more athletic all-around than “Average” Joe Flacco. The shift at quarterback for the Ravens could be too little, too late, though the future looks bright.

Flacco’s Decline

Joe Flacco won Super Bowl XLVII, won the Super Bowl MVP, got paid, and hasn’t been the same quarterback since. Granted, Ray Lewis hasn’t been around to lead the defense, and sure, Joe has been short athletic talent on offense. But that’s without doubt partially his doing. When you sign for big money, there’s less to spend on those around you.

Since signing his big deal in 2013, Flacco has had his worst career year and has led middle of the pack, at best, teams. Fans shouldn’t have been surprised when the Ravens drafted a quarterback this past offseason. Sure, the place they took their quarterback may have been surprising, but it was inevitable.

Jackson is the Future

He should’ve been the present earlier, and he certainly is the future of the Ravens offense. Jackson is a talented runner with good arm strength. Even though he may not have been a first-round talent, the Ravens were smart to trade up to 32 for him. They knew it was highly unlikely he’d fall to them later. They also knew who their QB of the future (and a pressure point for Flacco) was.

He has the ability to run like Michael Vick. He just needs to know when and where to run or slide. Jackson will be giving the AFC North fits for years to come, and if he can lead the team to another win in his anticipated third start, the starting job should be his to lose for the rest of the season and going forward.
