Gregg Popovich Ejected After Only 63 Seconds

During Wednesday evening’s contest between the Spurs and Nuggets, San Antonio HC Gregg Popovich was on the bench for a total of one minute and three seconds. It only took 63 seconds for Pop to be ejected. This was his second ejection of the week following one on Sunday in a loss at home against the Sacramento Kings.

What seemed to get Popovich so upset was an apparent non-call on a LaMarcus Aldridge shot in the post with Denver Nugget Paul Millsap guarding him. Pop jumped out of his seat to begin complaining that there should’ve been a foul called. He then called a timeout, so he could complain some more. He was “T’d” up twice in that span and sent back to the locker room to watch the game from a TV somewhere in the catacombs of AT&T Center.

This ejection makes coach Popovich the new record holder of the quickest ejection of an NBA head coach. It destroyed the old record by over 40 seconds. Even better, the early sendoff happened before San Antonio even point up on the board. To put things into perspective, I’ve done an extensive amount of research in order to better understand just how quick this ejection was. What things would’ve taken longer to do than it took Popovich to get ejected?

  • Almost five Pop ejections can be fit into the time span of brewing an average 12 cup pot of coffee.
  • Pop would’ve been ejected ¾ of the way through the National Anthem had someone started singing at tip-off.
  • The average person can hold their breath longer than Pop was on the court.
  • It took Pop longer to get off the court after his ejection than it took him to earn it.
  • It takes longer to heat up a hot pocket than it took Pop to piss off the refs.

Gregg Popovich has earned so much respect from everyone in the basketball world. Nobody should look at this and complain about how entitled/annoying he is to get two technicals and thrown out of a game in 63 seconds. This’ll be laughed off and forgotten in a few days. The Spurs will go on to continue their streak of playoff appearances of 22 years. Fun fact: their 22-year streak is the longest in all of the major North American sports leagues.

To end the evening, Popovich’s postgame interview consisted of him answering questions with “You’ll have to ask the officials.” He then stuck his head into Michael Malone’s interview and cracked some jokes.

The Spurs sit in the eighth seed of the West, as the season quickly comes to an end. They have their work cut out for them. They’ll face the defending champions in the Golden State Warriors in round one. Nothing is out of reach when it comes to legendary coach Gregg Popovich, not even an ejection just 63 seconds into a game.
