Matthew Stafford Is Overrated

Matthew Stafford Overrated

Matthew Stafford is the most overrated quarterback in the NFL. Detroit lost another game on Thursday to the Chicago Bears. The worst part about it was that they lost to Chase Daniel, the backup quarterback. The Lions have had good teams in the past who were able to contend in the challenging NFC North, but they simply can’t contend anymore.

Stafford was drafted by the Lions as the second overall pick in 2009. He was drafted as the Lions’ franchise quarterback, but he hasn’t shown a sign of his ability to win games for the football team. In the summer of 2017, Stafford signed a league record five-year, $135-million deal with $60 million guaranteed.

The Lions have many problems, but the biggest one, by far, is Matthew Stafford. He’s most overrated and overpaid quarterback in the NFL. Stafford carries a cap hit of $27 million and has yet to lead his team to a playoff win. That’s completely unacceptable for a QB being paid that hefty of a sum. He has great stats, but they’re very misleading. Stafford has thrown for over 35,000 yards in his career with over 230 TDs. Yet, he’s yet to lead his team to an NFC North title. Stafford doesn’t win games when he needs to win them.

I don’t care about whether people think he’s had “enough solid weapons” around him. Throughout Stafford’s entire career he’s had a multitude of great receiving threats. These receivers consist of Calvin Johnson, Eric Ebron, Reggie Bush, and Golden Tate. Now he has Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Kerryon Johnson coming out of the backfield. The fact that Stafford and these receivers haven’t produced a playoff win is simply pathetic.

True franchise quarterbacks can win games while carrying their football teams and lead those teams to playoff wins. Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and even Cam Newton have had seasons where they’ve brought their team to at least a Super Bowl appearance. Even the now unemployed Colin Kaepernick has led his team to a Super Bowl. I’m not saying that Kaepernick is better than Stafford, but it has to say something to the Lions and their fans that Matthew Stafford really isn’t all that good when you look back on it. At this point, I think it’s fair to call him a bust as a second overall pick.
