The UCL is back for the quarterfinal stages of the competition following an amazing Round of 16. After seeing the reigning champions fall at the hands of Ajax and PSG collapse, there are many great matchups ahead for fans around the world. With the new format of the draw, the path to Madrid is set. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s examine the four matches slotted for this week.

Tottenham vs Manchester City

The only Premier League match-up in this stage, City have been the team to beat in England, while Tottenham had been in a dry spell before their home match vs Crystal Palace a week prior. This game isn’t as obvious as many think. Although City have been unstoppable this season, they enter the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an anticipated atmosphere like no other. Spurs have been great in the UCL with an excellent performance last time out against Dortmund. On top of that City, have played more games and tired legs could catch up in some stage of the competition. Tottenham’s best chance to advance would be at their new stadium. I’ll depend on what Spurs team turns up.

Liverpool vs Porto

If there was one straight forward matchup, it’d have to be this one. Based on these two clubs meeting last year, Liverpool ended the tie in Porto with a 5-0 away win. This is a much better Liverpool team with the likes of Alisson, Fabinho, and Keita joining during the summer. Mo Salah broke his scoring drought this past weekend, and Sadio Mane is performing as Liverpool’s top player. Even if the offense slows down, Virgil Van Dijk is there to stop any offensive threat the Dragons could throw their way.

Ajax vs Juventus

The only fixture without an English team, Ajax vs Juventus is set to be an entertaining affair. Ajax earned a lot of credit going to the BernabĂ©u and beating Real Madrid with ease. On the other side, a Ronaldo-led Juventus side came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid. The looming question is “will Ronaldo play?”

Ajax could make the most of this opportunity, but even with Ronaldo, the youngsters have a shot to send another shock wave through the Champions League. Ajax flourish with their team on the ball and have a good mix of young talent and experienced veterans. Although, this Juventus team could have better players nearly at every position. Juventus should be a favorite, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ajax turn back the clock and advance.

Manchester United vs Barcelona

These are two teams at opposite ends of form. Manchester United recently lost to Wolves and haven’t had the best form, especially defensively. On the other side, Lionel Messi is the top league scorer in the world and played a vital role in the second leg win against Lyon. How United approach the game will determine how the tie will end. If OGS sets up the team to sit back, they may concede but won’t manufacture many chances to score. As an alternative, if they push forward and attack, Messi and crew will expose a poor United defense.
