The Los Angeles Lakers’ mediocre start to the season have their fans questioning “What’s wrong with the Lakers”? The Lakers were favored by many to represent the western conference in the 2022 NBA Finals. Their 11-11 start has critics questioning whether or not this Lakers roster, as currently constructed, is even a top tier basketball team this 2021-2022 NBA season. Our DMs are flooded with fans asking us “what’s wrong with the Lakers?”

There are numerous reasons to be pessimistic about the Lakers’ chances to compete in the 2022 NBA finals. We will be discussing the Lakers’ struggles in a big. You can join the debate by joining the best NBA discord server!

What’s wrong with the Lakers?

Lakers’ advanced stats.

There are very few avenues where the (11-11) Lakers excel this season. They rank 22nd in offensive rating and 18th in defensive rating. They rank 15th in AST %, however it is worth noting that that is to be expected from LeBron James lead teams. If we dig deep into their stats, there is very little they excel at.

Simply put, the Lakers do not have an identity.

The Lakers also have roster issues.

Lakers critics often criticize Frank Vogel for his lineups. In my opinion, that is more of a reflection of Anthony Davis’ reluctance to play the center position. The Lakers have yet to figure out what NBA fans already know, DeAndre Jordan can no longer play in today’s NBA. He certainly should not be starting.

Injuries have certainly not helped the Lakers either.

How the Lakers can get on the right track.

The Lakers should stagger Westbrook and James’ minutes. Rest Westbrook early and re-insert him when James takes his rest. This will give Westbrook the freedom to do Westbrook things, without interfering with how the Lakers have traditionally found success with LeBron James. Most importantly, the Lakers need Anthony Davis to play the center position. This will allow the Lakers to insert a shooter into the lineup, which will make both Westbrook and James’ lives easier.

There’s also the obvious answer, a healthy LeBron James.

There is a lot wrong with the Lakers, but it is a long season.

Sorry Westbrook haters, he is not the primary issue with the Lakers. Roster inconsistency, lack of identity, and failure to surround their ball handlers with shooters are at the top of the list. LeBron James and management know this. If the Lakers are serious about contending, they’ll address their weaknesses soon after December 15.
