Week 1 of the NFL season is always one of the toughest to predict. Teams have new players, new coaches, new schemes. How will they work? Who will stand out from the competition? It’s our job to look at these scenarios and decide their fate. Our picks for Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season should see a slight bump, as we figure out who’s for real and who’s pretending?
In the opening week, we finished 8-8 against the spread, an even .500. For a week that’s so up in the air, we’ll take that as a victory. Our most surprising losses included the Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos. Tennessee went into Cleveland and completely stifled the Browns’ offense. Baker Mayfield looked inept, as he was kept from feeding the ball to one of the most dominant WR duos in the league. As for Denver, the pick for them was more about Oakland. With all of the drama this offseason and the lack of a WR1, we figured Oakland would struggle. However, they proved to be competent, and Denver struggled with Joe Flacco at QB.
THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+7) @ Carolina Panthers (-7)
We took the Panthers (-7) at home over the Bucs. This game presented two 0-1 teams. Both teams struggled to do a whole lot from the QB position. The pick was more about who was more likely to continue struggling. If Jameis is involved in that conversation, I will always pick him to continue struggling. However, Cam Newton, after dealing with his shoulder injury, still looks completely different. His throwing motion looks off, and that led to another poor performance. Not to mention the fact he didn’t even look at Christian McCaffery most of the night.
Week 2 starts 0-1, but we know we can bounce back quickly.
